Žleby Castle is first mentioned in 1289; its founders were most likely the lords of Lichtenburk. In 1356 Charles IV acquired the castle, and in 1427 it surrendered to the Hussites, who partly demolished and burned it. The present extent of the château complex dates from a late Gothic rebuilding in the mid-15th century, and in the second half of the 16th century a four-wing Renaissance château with an arcaded courtyard was built on the site of the castle. Later owners included the Kaisersteins and the Schönfelds and, from 1754, the Auerspergs.
The best-known owner was Prince Vincenc Karel Auersperg, whose wife, Vilemína, née Colloredo-Mannsfeld, initiated the Romantic remodelling of the château from 1849. Žleby received new walls with towers meant to evoke a medieval castle, and the interiors were filled with collections of weapons, furniture, leather wall hangings, paintings, stained glass, manuscripts and books. The east wing, today's first tour route, had served as a tour route open to the public since the end of the 19th century.
After the death of Ferdinand Auersperg in 1942, the château passed to the family of his sister, Marie Trauttmansdorff, and in 1945 it was confiscated under a decree of the President of the Republic. Today it is managed by the National Heritage Institute and offers several guided tours showing the reception rooms, the private apartments of the princely family, the château theatre and the Great Tower.

- Soukromé apartmány (základní okruh) – The tour Život na zámku (life at the château) shows the salons, bedrooms and studies of the Auersperg princely family, the servants' rooms and the château chapel of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.
- Zámecké divadlo – The selective tour presents the château theatre, including its backstage area, dressing rooms and a collection of historical theatre and carousel costumes.

Prices apply to tours in Czech. Texts in English, German and Russian are lent free of charge at the ticket office, and tours in a foreign language must be booked in advance. You can pay by card or in cash. Free entry also applies to holders of the Ministry of Culture staff card, ICOMOS cards and Náš člověk cards, to NPÚ staff and to holders of NPÚ tickets.

Žleby Château does not have step-free access; the château recommends arranging a visit in advance for people with limited mobility. The tour Velká věž a sklepení involves more than 350 steps.

There are two car parks in the immediate vicinity of the château grounds.
By car from Prague takes about 1 hour, from Kutná Hora about 20 minutes and from Pardubice about 40 minutes. A red-marked hiking trail runs from Žleby via Ronov nad Doubravou to the ruins of Lichnice Castle.
