Around 100 works tell how the Albertinum became a place of modernism around 1900 through early acquisitions of French and Belgian sculpture, above all by Rodin.
Særudstilling
Major special exhibition opening in fall 2027 that interprets Ludwig Richter's idylls as deliberately designed counter-worlds to the crises of his time.
The building was constructed in 1559–1563 as the electoral arsenal on the Elbe and served military purposes for centuries. After a new arsenal was built in the Albertstadt district, it was converted in 1884–1887 into a museum for the sculpture collection, received its current Neo-Renaissance facade and was named after King Albert. Surviving parts of the Renaissance building include the columned hall on the ground floor, portals and sections of the rusticated facade.
The Albertinum came through the 1945 bombing raids comparatively unscathed. In the 1950s it became the collection point for art treasures returning from the Soviet Union; besides sculptures, the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) and the Münzkabinett (coin cabinet) were also on display here for many years. After the upper floor was rebuilt, the Gemäldegalerie Neue Meister moved in in 1965.
The 2002 Elbe flood threatened the holdings stored in the basement and prompted a fundamental renovation: since then, a flood-proof storage facility with conservation workshops has hovered above the newly roofed inner courtyard, the Lichthof. Since reopening in 2010, this museum of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden has presented painting and sculpture from Romanticism to the present.
The tour links the Galerie Neue Meister with the sculpture collection from 1800 onward, ranging from Caspar David Friedrich through Impressionism, Expressionism and art from the GDR to Gerhard Richter, whose archive is also based at the Albertinum. Glass-walled visible storage areas offer a look at holdings that are otherwise hidden.
