Om museet

The Bavarian Bog and Peat Museum is located north of Rottau on the edge of the Kendlmühlfilzen raised bog, directly on the Munich–Salzburg railway line. From 1920, Bernau prison operated a peat works here: prisoners were taken daily by narrow-gauge railway to the peat station and on into the bog to the peat cutting, and the track network in the bog was around 30 kilometres long in total. The works produced fuel peat, litter peat and garden peat, which was loaded directly onto the train.

Since 1988, a volunteer museum association has looked after the listed site, which it was also able to purchase in 2015. The wooden building of the peat station, about 17 metres high, is regarded as an impressive industrial monument; inside stands a peat bale press from 1933, which according to the association is the only completely preserved and still functioning one of its kind in Europe. It is demonstrated during the guided tours.

The exhibition itself is housed in the former carpentry workshop of the prison. It explains how bogs form, introduces the plants and animals of the raised bog, and shows tools used in traditional hand peat cutting by farmers. Among the best-known pieces are planks of a Celtic trackway from the Rottauer Filze, a replica of the bog body "Rosalinde" and a model of the formation of Lake Chiemsee. For the 100th anniversary of the peat station, a permanent exhibition on the history of the works and its connection to Bernau prison was added in 2021. With the locomotive "Molly", a narrow-gauge railway runs across the former works site, from which paths lead into the nature reserve.
