Om museet

Lead ore mining shaped Mechernich for centuries: the Celts and Romans already extracted ore here, and at peak times more than 4,000 people worked for the Mechernich works. With their closure in 1957, lead mining in the Eifel came to an end, even though one of Europe's largest lead deposits still lies underground.

The Günnersdorf mine, part of this mining district, had an eventful history. After decades of standstill, it was put back into operation in 1938, but abandoned again as early as the beginning of 1943 because of insufficient yields. It then served as an air-raid shelter for the population and, in 1944, additionally as an underground emergency hospital with an operating room and pharmacy. From 1953, sludge from ore processing was flushed into the cavities.

In the 1990s, dedicated volunteers uncovered parts of the old mine again and made it accessible as a show mine, which opened in 1995. Today the museum is run by the volunteer-based Förderverein Bergbaumuseum Mechernich. In the museum building, tools, photographs and a large 1:100-scale model of the Mechernich Bleiberg illustrate the history of mining; underground, mine guides lead visitors through tunnels, shafts and mined-out cavities. A mining-history hiking trail also opens up the former open-cast and works area.

Rundvisningerja · varighed ca. 1,5 t.
Godt at videThe mine can only be visited on a guided tour: after an introduction in the museum (approx. 20–30 minutes), you spend about 1.5 hours underground wearing a hard hat; in total around 1.5 to 2 hours. The paths are dry but unpaved and partly sandy – wear sturdy shoes, no sandals or high heels. Several steep flights of stairs must be climbed in the mine.
