Bienenkundemuseum Münstertal
Large beekeeping museum in the Münstertal: beekeeping from the Stone Age to today across more than 800 m², with live bees and a Black Forest diorama.
Om museet
The Bienenkundemuseum (beekeeping museum) traces back to the Münstertal Beekeepers' Association, founded in 1901, which shaped bee breeding in the valley for decades – for example with its own mating station for breeding the Carniolan honey bee. Under its long-time chairman Eugen Pfefferle, the association opened its own museum in 1978 in the former town hall of Obermünstertal in the Spielweg district. In 1985 a teaching apiary was added nearby, where courses for new beekeepers take place.
Across more than 800 square meters in twelve rooms, the museum shows how people have worked with bees since the Stone Age: from honey hunters and medieval forest beekeepers (Zeidler) to modern apiculture. Hundreds of exhibits from many countries, live bees and a video show explain the biology of these insects and their importance for nature and agriculture.
A local history section complements the collection. Association members spent countless hours building a large 1:50 scale diorama that depicts former life in the valley with Black Forest houses, charcoal burners, forest workers and the monastery. The museum is still run by the beekeepers' association on a volunteer basis without government funding; in 1980 it received a state award for community civic initiatives.
