Om museet

Frederick the Great had the Bildergalerie (Picture Gallery) built east of Sanssouci Palace between 1755 and 1764 to plans by Johann Gottfried Büring. The long, single-story building is the counterpart to the Neue Kammern (New Chambers) on the west side of the palace and is considered the oldest surviving museum building of a prince in Germany.

The king initially collected mainly French Rococo painting, but then turned to history paintings of the Italian Renaissance and the Flemish and Dutch Baroque. A catalog from 1764 lists 146 works. The paintings were hung closely together and arranged by school: Flemish and Dutch in the west wing, Italians in the east, the principal works in the center and smaller formats in a cabinet. The magnificent gallery, with its gilded coffered ceiling, diamond-patterned marble floor and green wall coverings, has survived largely in its original state.

During the Second World War the paintings were evacuated, and many ended up in the Soviet Union. A large proportion returned in 1958, but numerous pictures are still missing today. In 2024 a closure loomed for cost reasons, which was averted with additional federal funding.

Today the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation) shows well over 100 paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries in the restored Baroque hang, complemented by ancient and French sculptures. The gallery is open seasonally from May to October.
