Binnenschifffahrts-Museum Oderberg
Brandenburg's oldest technology museum: inland navigation, fishing, and rafting on the Oder, plus the paddle steamer RIESA from 1897 in the museum park.
Om museet
The foundation was laid by the teacher and amateur archaeologist Hermann Seidel, who in 1954 set up a local history room for the numerous Bronze Age and Iron Age finds from the surrounding area. Under the later museum director Günther Hoffmann, the focus soon shifted to inland navigation in the Oder region, and the local history room became a technology museum.
In 1978 Hoffmann brought the decommissioned Elbe side-wheel paddle steamer RIESA to Oderberg and saved it from being scrapped. The ship was built in 1897 as the HABSBURG for the Dresden excursion fleet and is now the largest exhibit; for its 120th birthday in 2017 the exhibition on board was redesigned. After 1990 the museum was at times on the verge of closing, until the Förderverein Binnenschifffahrts-Museum Oderberg e.V. (friends' association) took it over in 2008.
In the main building, exhibitions show regional history since the Stone Age, ship models, waterway construction, fishing, and rafting. In the museum park on the Alte Oder, besides the RIESA, there are other vessels such as the launch "Eberswalde" and the hydrofoil "Silberpfeil". The museum also houses the city's tourist information office and is a cultural meeting place with concerts, lectures, and festivals.
