Midlertidigt lukket
Midlertidigt lukket (forventet til 2026). The museum has been closed since December 5, 2021. After renovation and a new concept by the Stiftung Kleines Bürgerhaus, the City of Hattingen still names fall 2026 as the planned reopening; an exact date is not known, and earlier dates (2024, spring 2025) were not met. The tours for the 2026 Open Monument Day were canceled.

Om museet

The Bügeleisenhaus ("flat iron house") on Haldenplatz was built in 1611 by the Hattingen citizen Wilhelm Elling. It owes its name to its wedge-shaped floor plan: because it stands between two converging alleys, the house narrows from about eight meters to a good two and a half. The projecting upper floor rests on carved brackets with scrolls, sun wheels and envy masks.

Over the centuries, cloth makers lived and worked here; from 1853 the Jewish butcher family Schmidt, and later the Cahn family, ran a butcher shop with a store on the ground floor. The last Jewish owners were expropriated, deported and murdered by the National Socialists in 1941. After the war the house first passed to the Jewish Trust Corporation and later came into municipal ownership.

The Heimatverein Hattingen/Ruhr, founded in 1921, took over the building in the 1950s, had it restored in keeping with its listed status, and opened a local history museum there in 1962. From 2012 the association mainly showed participatory temporary exhibitions on city history, for example on local mining or Hattingen souvenirs, and counted around 13,000 guests in ten years. On December 5, 2021, the museum closed for technical and content revision. In 2024 the Heimatverein donated the house to the foundation "Kleines Bürgerhaus" within the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. After the electrical system is renovated, a new exhibition concept on the history of the house and the old town is to follow; the City of Hattingen names fall 2026 as the planned date for reopening.
