Om museet

Around 1226, Archbishop Siegfried III of Eppstein of Mainz had a castle built on a rocky spur above the mouth of the Lahn River to protect the Electorate of Mainz’s territory around Lahnstein and the nearby silver mine. The castle and its chapel are first mentioned in 1245. In the late Middle Ages, Lahneck repeatedly played a role in imperial politics: King Adolf of Nassau stayed here in 1298, and in 1400 the Rhenish prince-electors met at the castle to discuss deposing King Wenceslas.

The castle was badly damaged in the Thirty Years’ War, and in 1688 French troops burned down the last remaining roofs. After secularization, the ruin passed to Nassau in 1803 and shortly afterward into private hands. In 1774, Goethe dedicated his poem “Geistesgruß” to the sight of it; the legend of Idilia Dubb, a young Scottish woman said to have starved to death on the keep in the mid-19th century, remains one of the castle’s best-known tales to this day.

From 1852, the Scottish railroad entrepreneur Edward Moriarty had the ruin rebuilt in Gothic Revival style in the spirit of Rhine Romanticism. In 1907, Vice Admiral Robert Mischke acquired the castle, which has remained in his family ever since. Guided tours show the castle kitchen, St. Ulrich’s Chapel with its Gothic stained glass, the Knights’ Hall, and the palas (main residential building) with furniture, paintings, sculptures, and a collection of weapons.
