City museum on Aachen's Katschhof between the cathedral and the town hall: Aachen's history from the Stone Age to today, with Charlemagne as the central figure.
The exhibition traces how Jülicher Straße developed into Aachen's most important industrial district in the 19th century – with products ranging from umbrellas to safes – and looks at working and living conditions as well as structural change.
Om museet
The Centre Charlemagne was created as the starting point of the Route Charlemagne, which links key sites of Aachen's history such as the cathedral, the town hall, the Couven-Museum and the Zeitungsmuseum (newspaper museum). The City of Aachen opened the new city museum in 2014, the year marking the 1,200th anniversary of the death of Charlemagne, who had made Aachen the center of his empire.
The site on the west side of the Katschhof lies on the grounds of the Carolingian palace, where a passageway once connected the royal hall and the Church of St. Mary. Later a courthouse stood here, then a Baroque building by Johann Joseph Couven and, from 1903, an administrative building. After it was destroyed in the war, Gerhard Graubner built a modern administrative building in 1957–1960, which is now a listed monument. The Aachen firm hks Architekten converted it into a museum from 2009, restored the facades and added a glass entrance; a triangular gallery for temporary exhibitions echoes the irregular squares of the old town.
The permanent exhibition on the second floor tells the city's history across some 800 square meters in six sections – from early settlement and the Roman spa town to the palace and coronation city, the Baroque spa resort and industrialization, up to the European city of the Charlemagne Prize (Karlspreis). Stations include more than 20 media stations, a history lab on the Carolingian era and the original bronze statue of Charlemagne from the market fountain. On the first floor, the museum shows changing exhibitions on aspects of Aachen's history.
