Om museet

Around 1600 the Danish King Christian IV had a water-powered hammer mill built on the Krusau river north of Flensburg. It grew into a copper and brass works that around 1800 was considered the largest industrial plant in the Duchy of Schleswig. In particularly high demand were copper sheets and later Muntz metal sheets, used to protect wooden ship hulls against shipworm. Modernized after 1864 and run from 1889 as the Crusauer Kupfer- und Messingfabrik AG, the works produced armaments and semi-finished products in both World Wars and closed in 1962 after around 360 years.

The teacher couple Gisela and Bodo Daetz collected evidence of the factory and the village from the 1960s onward and opened a small private museum in 1997, which moved into the Turmhaus in 2002. In 1998 a friends' association was founded, which had the historic factory halls renovated; since 2009 a non-profit company has run the museum.

In July 2014 the industrial museum reopened in three restored halls. It shows the history of the works and the workers' housing estate, a workshop in the turbine house with access to the water wheel, and the old machine hall with a listed steam engine from 1933 and a reconstructed hammer mill. The surviving workers' houses in the village are among the oldest workers' housing estates in Northern Europe.
