Om museet
The Dackelmuseum (Dachshund Museum) grew out of the collecting passion of two master florists, Josef “Seppi” Küblbeck and Oliver Storz, who spent around two decades gathering items related to the dachshund. In April 2018 they opened their museum in the Kleine Residenz on Residenzplatz in Passau, which attracted about 20,000 guests in its first year, with visitors coming from many countries.
After a dispute with the city of Passau over a seating area in front of the building, the operators decided to move in 2022. They found premises in a listed medieval building in Regensburg's old town, not far from the cathedral, and converted them within a few weeks. The museum reopened there in April 2023; since then the founders have run it together with a former employee as co-owner.
From a collection that, by its own account, comprises more than 30,000 objects, display cases show several thousand exhibits. Themes include the basic types of dachshund, its role in hunting and among the nobility, the dachshund as a Bavarian trademark, as a toy and as a muse, and appearances in film and television. A highlight is the 1972 Olympic mascot Waldi. In 2024 the operators organised a dachshund parade in Regensburg that set a world record with more than 1,100 dogs.
