Om museet
The German Albert Schweitzer Center combines a museum, a library, and an archive on the life and work of Albert Schweitzer. It also serves as the office of the Deutscher Hilfsverein für das Albert-Schweitzer-Spital in Lambarene, which operates the center. In September 2023, the new premises in Offenbach am Main were opened with a ceremony in the Evangelische Stadtkirche.
The permanent exhibition "Albert Schweitzer – Grenzenlose Menschlichkeit im Denken und Handeln" traces his life path, above all his work as a doctor in Equatorial Africa. At its center is Schweitzer's original travel trunk, a symbol of a life between continents. A biographical entrance station and eight experience stations with original letters, sound recordings, films, a quiz, board games, and interactive panels also convey the relevance of his ethic of reverence for life.
The library holds more than 3,700 books in around 20 languages, including Schweitzer's complete published writings. The archive documents his life and work chronologically and is open to all for research. The center also lends two traveling exhibitions and offers programs for schools, students, and teachers.
