Deutsches Apotheken-Museum
History of pharmacy in Heidelberg Castle: historic pharmacies, medicine jars and a laboratory in the Apothecary Tower – included in the castle ticket.
Om museet
The museum was established in 1937 as a nonprofit foundation and opened in Munich in 1938. Its core was the pharmaceutical history collection of pharmacist Walter Heinrici. In 1943 the Munich building was almost completely destroyed in an air raid; after the war the rescued holdings were initially taken to the Neue Residenz in Bamberg.
Since 1957 the museum has been based in Heidelberg Castle. Its rooms are spread across the Ottheinrichsbau, the Ludwigsbau and the Apothekerturm (Apothecary Tower), under whose dome a historic laboratory has been recreated. It is run by the Deutsche Apotheken Museum-Stiftung and supported by a friends' association and the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists (ABDA).
The exhibition spans the remedies of antiquity through to drug manufacturing in the 21st century. On view are fully furnished pharmacies from the 17th to 19th centuries, precious apothecary jars made of glass, faience and majolica – including one of the most important collections of enamel-painted pharmacy glasses of the 18th century – and around 1,000 historic medicines. Because admission is included in the castle ticket, the museum is one of the most visited in Germany; in 2025 it welcomed more than 680,000 visitors. Since 2019 a pharmacy garden with historic medicinal plants, accessible only on guided tours, has added to the offering.
