Om museet

The roots go back to 1933, when the teacher Richard Suhr assembled a city history collection for the town's 700th anniversary. Partly scattered after the war, it was on display again from 1954 as a local history museum in a building of the former Poor Clares' convent.

In 1963 a separate room on amber was added, also inspired by Ribnitz's tradition of amber processing. Since 1975 the house has been called the Bernsteinmuseum (Amber Museum), and since 2000 it has borne the honorary name Deutsches Bernsteinmuseum. Under Hans Erichson, who directed it from 1966 to 1991, the collection grew steadily. Since 2002 a museum association has run the museum; in 2010 the convent church was included, with an exhibition on the history of the convent and the later noblewomen's convent.

One focus is holdings of the former Staatliche Bernstein-Manufaktur Königsberg, which were long shown on loan from TUI AG and were acquired for the city of Ribnitz-Damgarten in 2023 with the help of the federal government, the state, and foundations. In addition there is an exhibition on the history of Ribnitz and Damgarten as well as changing special exhibitions.
