Anniversary exhibition marking 65 years since the iga 1961, in the museum and in a historic pavilion: how the GDR used garden design as a stage for socialist modernism and how today's egapark emerged from it.
Om museet
The idea of a dedicated museum for horticulture dates back to the 1930s; a first Deutsches Gartenbaumuseum was established in 1949/50 in Markkleeberg near Leipzig. In Erfurt, a city with a long gardening tradition, the museum was re-founded in 1961 in connection with the International Horticultural Exhibition (iga).
It is housed in the Cyriaksburg, a fortification documented since the late 15th century that was expanded into a Prussian citadel after 1815; the buildings visible today were mostly built between 1825 and 1829. The complex lies in the middle of today's egapark, the successor to the iga grounds.
In 1995 the Free State of Thuringia, the city of Erfurt and the Zentralverband Gartenbau (Central Horticultural Association) established the nonprofit Stiftung Deutsches Gartenbaumuseum. After extensive renovation, the museum reopened in 2000. In summer 2022 a completely redesigned permanent exhibition covering around 1,000 square meters followed, which has won several design awards.
With interactive stations, it leads from garden dreams through cultivation, breeding and trade to questions of nutrition, climate protection and gardening in space. It is complemented by special exhibitions, a MuseumsGarten (museum garden) and a specialist library.
