Om museet
The roots of the German Typewriter Museum go back to 1934/35, when a teaching collection of historic machines was created in Kulmbach for the examination of teachers of typewriting. In 1936 it came with the Deutsche Stenografenschaft to Bayreuth, to the newly opened Haus der Kurzschrift on Luitpoldplatz. At first the machines served exclusively for teaching. Towards the end of the war the most valuable pieces were moved to safety; only part of the collection survived this period.
After the war the Forschungs- und Ausbildungsstätte für Kurzschrift (shorthand research and training institute), newly founded in 1947, took over the remaining machines, initially in trust and later as property. Through donations and purchases the holdings grew steadily. After several interim locations, the museum was housed from 1982 in outbuildings of the former orphanage in St. Georgen until it had to vacate this site in August 2022. Since September 2024 it has had a new home in an outbuilding of Jagdschloss Thiergarten in the south of the city.
Today the collection comprises more than 1,200 writing machines from many countries, of which about 200 are on display. It traces the path from the first mechanical machines of the 19th century to electric and electronic devices and makes visible the variety of technical solutions, such as the type wheel, type cylinder or golf-ball element. Separate areas are devoted to IBM typewriters, whose collection goes back to a donation, and to stenotype machines. The museum is run by volunteers and regularly takes part in city events such as the Bayreuth Museum Night.
