Motorcycle and bicycle museum in Neckarsulm's Teutonic Order castle, featuring 140 motorcycle brands, a large NSU collection and the Kreidler factory collection.
Racing bikes, prototypes and road models from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki, many from private collections – including Eddie Lawson's world-championship Honda NSR 500 (1989). Part of a Japan project planned over two years.
Om museet
The museum opened in May 1956 as the Deutsches Zweiradmuseum (German Two-Wheeler Museum) in Neckarsulm, home of the NSU works, which had built bicycles, motorcycles and later cars here since the 19th century. Initially around 600 square meters of exhibition space were available in the historic Deutschordensschloss (Teutonic Order castle); in the 1980s the space was doubled.
With the creation of a separate department on the history of NSU, the museum was renamed Deutsches Zweirad- und NSU-Museum in 1986. In 1991 a glass ramp building linked the historic Bandhaus and Amtshaus sections into a continuous tour. Today the exhibition extends over six floors with around 2,000 square meters; in its public branding, the museum now calls itself the Deutsches Motorrad Museum.
The municipal collection comprises more than 1,000 objects. Around 400 exhibits from some 140 motorcycle and 130 bicycle manufacturers are on display – from Karl Drais's running machine to modern racing bikes. Highlights include one of the largest NSU collections, with models such as the Max, the Fox and the record-breaking machines, the Kreidler factory collection shown on permanent loan, a racing department and special exhibitions on motorcycling nations that change every year.
