Om museet
The foundation of the Printing Museum is the estate of the Frankfurt type foundry D. Stempel AG, which closed in 1985. The association Haus für Industriekultur took over the technical equipment together with all the hot-metal typefaces, matrices and punches; in the mid-1990s it set up workshops for type founding, typesetting and printing.
The collection is housed in a listed factory building from 1906 on Kirschenallee, originally built for a court furniture factory and later used, among other things, as a warehouse. The association acquired the building in 1991, and the museum has been located there since 1997. After the association was dissolved, the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt took over the building in 2001 as a branch.
The museum sees itself as an "active" museum: volunteer typesetters and printers demonstrate hand composition, machine composition, type founding and various printing methods on working machines. The exhibition ranges from iron hand presses of the early 19th century and Linotype typesetting machines to a newspaper rotary press from 1935. The branch is currently closed temporarily.
