Om museet
The Benedictine abbey of Seligenstadt was founded in 828 by Einhard, adviser to Charlemagne, and existed until its dissolution in 1803. The complex on the Main, with its own mill, garden, bakery and craftsmen, functioned like a town within a town. In the 11th century the imperial abbey, placed directly under the rulers, experienced an early flowering; synods and court assemblies met here.
After the destruction of the Thirty Years' War, the abbey was rebuilt in the Baroque style from the end of the 17th century. From this second period of prosperity date the prelature built in 1699, with the residential and guest rooms of the abbot, the summer refectory with frescoes from 1722, and the monastery kitchen. The monastery mill from 1574 is the oldest building in the present complex.
With the secularization in 1803, the monastery fell to Hesse-Darmstadt and served government authorities until the 1960s. Since the 1980s the Hessische Schlösserverwaltung has been restoring the complex to its appearance in the 17th and 18th centuries, and it also reconstructed the convent garden and the apothecary's garden. Today the monastery belongs to the Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Hessen (State Palaces and Gardens of Hesse) and offers tours of the show rooms, guided tours, rallies and events.
