Om museet
The Eisenbahnfreunde Jünkerath (Jünkerath Railway Friends) was founded in 1986, when the Jünkerath–Losheim line went back into operation; the association originally wanted to run a heritage railway with railbuses there. When this proved impossible in the long term, it shifted its focus to collecting and researching regional railway history and in 2008 opened the “Kleines Eisenbahnmuseum Jünkerath” (Small Railway Museum Jünkerath).
Jünkerath was once one of the most important railway junctions in the Eifel, with hundreds of jobs on the railway. From that time the association gathered uniforms, lamps, telephones, signal box equipment, tools, timetables and service regulations. The museum was initially located in the cellar rooms of the Eisenmuseum am Römerwall, until the flood of July 2021 inundated the rooms and destroyed parts of the collection.
At the new, flood-proof location on Mühlengasse in the Glaadt district, the exhibition was rebuilt. Visitors are greeted by figures in railway uniforms, can explore a recreated ticket counter and can learn background information at more than 40 stations via a smartphone audio guide. A special feature is the extensive plan archive on Eifel railway history. The museum is a member of the Museumsverband Rheinland-Pfalz and is run entirely by volunteers.
