Om museet
The Elwetritsch – often also spelled Elwedritsche – is a mythical creature of Palatinate folk culture: a shy, chicken-like bird that supposedly hides in hedges, woods and vineyards and is hunted on nocturnal outings. The small museum in Speyer's old town is devoted to this creature with a good dose of humour.
It was set up by the operators of a wine tavern on Antoniengasse, who see the project as a cheerful introduction to the Palatinate way of life. On the upper floor, lovingly made taxidermy models and display boards show the creature's supposed habitat, the study of the animal known as “Tritschology” and its cultural history.
Its supposed relatives from other regions also have a place: the Bavarian Wolpertinger and the Thuringian Rasselbock. On the ground floor, Palatinate dishes and wine spritzers are served, so the museum visit can be discussed right at the table. The city of Speyer ran the house as its smallest museum.
