Om museet

The Europäisches Hansemuseum opened on May 27, 2015, at the foot of Lübeck's castle hill, where the castle and later the monastery stood on one of the city's oldest settlement sites. The building was made possible above all by Lübeck's Possehl-Stiftung; the museum is run by a non-profit company and works closely with the Forschungsstelle für die Geschichte der Hanse und des Ostseeraums (research center for the history of the Hanseatic League and the Baltic region).

The new building by Studio Andreas Heller combines modern architecture with the Burgkloster, a monastery founded by Dominicans around 1229 that served as a poorhouse and hospital after the Reformation and was converted into a courthouse and prison at the end of the 19th century. The facade of the new building takes up motifs from the city wall and gabled houses; the building has received awards including the DAM Preis für Architektur and a RIBA Award.

The permanent exhibition tells the story of the Hanseatic League not chronologically but through walk-in re-creations of historic places – such as Novgorod, Bruges, Bergen and the London Steelyard – complemented by cabinets with original objects. Visitors use their ticket to call up additional information in several languages. Special exhibitions are also shown in the Burgkloster. In the anniversary year 2025, around 107,000 guests came; more than one million people have visited the museum since it opened.
