Freilichtmuseum Diesdorf
One of the oldest open-air museums in Germany: 26 historic buildings and farm gardens show rural life in the Altmark.
Om museet
The impetus came in 1911 from the Diesdorf country doctor Georg Schulze, who founded a welfare association with about 20 citizens and farmers. The association acquired a plot on the edge of the village, built a bathing facility at the old monastery pond and wanted to set up a typical Altmark farmstead next to it as a local history museum. In 1912 and 1913 a bakehouse and a granary were already moved here, before the First World War and inflation slowed the plans.
Not until 1927 could a Low German hall house be purchased as the main building, and in 1932 the local history museum opened. After the Second World War, the municipality first took over the museum and the bathing facility; from 1952 the museum belonged to the Salzwedel district and was affiliated with the Danneil-Museum.
The museologist Peter Fischer shaped the expansion from 1970: under his leadership the museum village grew from three to 17 buildings, the work received an academic basis in folklore studies, and in 1989 the museum became independent again. After German reunification, the "Dorfkrug" (village inn) was built, among other things, which now houses the entrance and café.
Since 1998 the open-air museum has formed, together with the Danneil-Museum in Salzwedel and the Langobardenwerkstatt Zethlingen (Lombard workshop), the network of museums of the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. It now comprises 26 historic residential, farm and craft buildings along with gardens.
