Upper Bavaria's largest open-air museum: almost 70 relocated farmsteads, mills and alpine huts on 40 hectares above Lake Kochel, with crafts, animals and a show brewery.

For the 50th anniversary, the exhibition is spread across six stations on the grounds: they tell previously unknown life stories and each present one decade from the 1970s to the present with games, television and music.
Selected collection pieces, such as a dugout canoe from Lake Starnberg, show how the collection has grown and what stories lie behind the objects and their previous owners.
At the branch site in Benediktbeuern Abbey, clothing from the 19th century to the present is presented in unexpected ways, including more than 60 Riegelhauben (traditional Bavarian bonnets).
Om museet
In the early 1970s the Bezirk Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria district) decided to create a central open-air museum of rural architecture and everyday culture and acquired a hillside above the Kochelsee lake near Großweil for this purpose. After groundbreaking in 1973, the museum opened in October 1976 with a first group of farmsteads, barns and a mill; the founding director was Ottmar Schuberth.
Over the following decades the site grew steadily. Buildings from all over Upper Bavaria were dismantled and faithfully rebuilt here, including complete farmsteads, craftsmen's houses and a group of alpine buildings. The houses are presented as holistically as possible with their furnishings, gardens and livestock, and craftspeople demonstrate traditional techniques every day. Since 1982 the Bauernhausmuseum Amerang (farmhouse museum) has also been part of the museum.
Between 2016 and 2018 a new entrance building with exhibition space, a restaurant and a show brewery was built. Since 2021 a building group for northern Upper Bavaria has been under construction, and objects such as a 1950s gas station bring the more recent past into focus. In 2024 the Sammlung Tracht – Gwand – Mode (costume and fashion collection) in Benediktbeuern was added.
Today almost 70 historic buildings stand on around 40 hectares; together with the textile holdings, the folk life collection comprises around 100,000 objects from the late 18th century to the present. In 2026 the museum celebrates its 50th anniversary.
