Om museet

The Futurium originated in a joint initiative of the German federal government and major science organizations. In July 2014, the nonprofit “Haus der Zukunft gGmbH,” today’s Futurium gGmbH, was founded for this purpose. Its shareholders include, besides the Federal Ministry of Research, the Max Planck Society, the Helmholtz and Leibniz Associations, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, and the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as foundations and companies.

The Berlin firm Richter Musikowski won the architectural competition in 2013. After construction began in 2015, a pentagonal building with far-projecting wings and a facade of thousands of printed glass panels rose on the Alexanderufer between the main station and the government district. Photovoltaics and solar thermal panels on the roof, a latent heat storage system, and a rainwater cistern make it an exceptionally energy-efficient building; the roof is home to the publicly accessible Skywalk.

The Futurium opened to the public on September 5, 2019. It does not see itself as a traditional museum but as a place where possible futures are presented and discussed: the exhibition is divided into the thinking spaces (Denkräume) Humans, Nature, and Technology; in the basement, the Futurium Lab invites visitors to experiment; and the Forum serves as a stage for debates and events. Changing thematic focuses and special exhibitions round out the program; admission has been free since the opening.
