Om museet
The gallery opened on May 30, 1989, as the “Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunst der DDR” (Museum Haus Ludwig for Art of the GDR). It grew out of a collaboration between the city of Saarlouis and the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig as part of the first town twinning between East and West Germany, linking Saarlouis and Eisenhüttenstadt. Its first home was a former 1930s bank building on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße, where art from East Germany drawn from the Ludwig Collection was on display.
After reunification, the institution was renamed “Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen” and opened up to changing exhibitions of art from East and West, as well as caricature, poster art, and photography. When the city sold the bank building, the old venue closed on July 2, 2017, after 28 years.
Since September 3, 2017, the institution has been housed as the Ludwig Galerie Saarlouis on the first floor of the Kaserne VI across the street, which had previously been renovated and converted for museum use; under the umbrella “Museen in der Kaserne VI,” it shares the building with the Städtisches Museum (municipal museum). The gallery has no permanent exhibition. Instead, it presents themed temporary exhibitions, often with loans from the Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, along with annual exhibitions by regional artists' groups and an educational program.
