Gentil-Haus
Collector's villa of the manufacturer Anton Gentil, with idiosyncratically designed rooms and art from the Middle Ages to the modern era – by guided tour only.
Om museet
Anton Gentil (1867–1951), a trained locksmith and foundry worker, made his fortune in Aschaffenburg as a pump manufacturer, which earned him the nickname "Pumpen-Anton" (Pump Anton). Over several decades he built up a highly diverse art collection. In 1922/23 he had a villa built for it on Grünewaldstraße to his own designs, much of whose decoration he forged, carved and cast himself.
With its tall masonry hall, galleries, dark wooden ceilings and small windows, the house stands in the tradition of artists' houses and the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1949 Gentil bequeathed the collection and the villa to his hometown; today they are managed by the Museen der Stadt Aschaffenburg.
The rooms display paintings from the 16th to the 20th century, medieval sculptures and altars, East Asian sculpture, stoneware, glass, chests and folk art, as well as modern art, including works Gentil acquired directly from Franz von Stuck. The house chapel holds a Swabian winged altarpiece; the collection also includes a large nativity scene from Lienz with around 500 figures. The house can only be visited on guided tours.
