Geschichtspark Bärnau-Tachov
Archaeological open-air museum on the border with Bohemia, with around 30 reconstructed buildings showing life in the Middle Ages from the 9th to the 14th century.
Om museet
The history park is run by the association Via Carolina – Goldene Straße, founded in Bärnau in 2010, which aims to bring the shared history of the Upper Palatinate and Bohemia to life and strengthen German-Czech neighborly ties. It is named after the medieval trade route from Nuremberg to Prague that passed by Bärnau. Construction began in the spring of 2010, and the first section opened in August 2011; the project was financed in part by European cross-border cooperation funds, the Free State of Bavaria and sponsors.
Today, on almost eleven hectares, around 30 buildings show how building and living changed over eight centuries in a settlement area shaped by the West Slavs. Each house is based on a specific archaeological find and was built using historical techniques – from pit houses to half-timbered buildings. In the south lies an early medieval Slavic village with a cult site, in the middle a motte-and-bailey castle with a church as a sign of Christianization, and in the north a high medieval small town with craftsmen's houses.
The ArchaeoCentrum was added at the end of 2018: on a showcase construction site, a way station from the time of Emperor Charles IV, with a palas (great hall), gatehouse, chapel and defensive wall, has since been taking shape using medieval methods, accompanied by a laboratory for experimental archaeology. The Bauhütte Bärnau (building workshop) passes on old craft techniques in courses. On event weekends, reenactors bring the houses to life with living history.
