Om museet
The Haus der Geschichte Dinkelsbühl – von Krieg und Frieden is housed in the Old Town Hall on Altrathausplatz. The four-wing complex around an inner courtyard goes back to a stone house of two patrician families first mentioned in 1361; remains of a residential tower from the early 14th century survive in the prison cells beneath the south wing. From 1550 to 1855, the council and administration of the Free Imperial City met here.
The permanent exhibition "Faszination Dinkelsbühl" uses over 600 exhibits, staged rooms and media stations to ask why the town looks the way it does today. The tour leads from the medieval founding of the town through guilds, patriciate and the Reformation to the Thirty Years' War, the confessional parity after 1648 and the incorporation into Bavaria in 1806. Separate rooms are devoted to the textile trade, a pewterer's workshop and the children's book author Christoph von Schmid.
On the second floor, the Dinkelsbühl Gallery shows works by painters who discovered the town as a subject around 1900; in the attic stands a large miniature model of the old town. In the cellar vaults, an exhibition documents the witch persecution in Dinkelsbühl. The museum is run by the town of Dinkelsbühl together with the Historischer Verein Alt-Dinkelsbühl.
