Haus Issum is a moated noble residence in the center of Issum, first mentioned in documents in 1338. After changing owners, the castle was destroyed in 1551 and rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century as a castle-like brick complex. In 1912 the municipality of Issum bought the estate; the main building served as the town hall until 1980 and today houses, among other things, the council chamber and the wedding room.
The two-story gatehouse leading to the former farmyard was long the caretaker's residence. In 1984 the idea arose to use the empty rooms for a local history museum. After several years of renovation with state funds, the museum opened on March 14, 1993; the name "His-Törchen" was chosen by Issum residents in an ideas competition.
The house is run by a volunteer working group, which was awarded the Josef-Diebels-Bürgerpreis (citizens' prize) in 2008. In 1996 the adjoining outbuildings were added, and since then around 145 square meters have been available. The collection grew out of pictures, tools, and objects provided by Issum residents; works by local artists can also be seen, such as ceramics by Wetzling-Lenders and sculptures by Clemens Pasch. Each year the working group presents three to four changing exhibitions, including traditionally an Easter egg exhibition for the Easter market.
