Hans Scharoun's "Nudeldampfer" (noodle steamer) in Löbau – an icon of Neues Bauen modernism that you can tour with an audio guide or guided tour, and even stay overnight in.
The opening of the "Schrankschätze" (Cabinet Treasures) series centered on Scharoun's living room cabinet from Insterburg: it presents the restored documentary film by George Sluizer and Wim van de Velde. End date not specified.
Drawings by children who got to know the house on school trips, family tours or with the explorer booklet show their view of the unusual architecture. End date not specified.
Om museet
The house was commissioned by Fritz Schminke, who ran his father's pasta factory in Löbau. He hired the architect Hans Scharoun, who had previously worked in places including Insterburg in East Prussia, to design a home for his family right next to the factory. Built in 1932/33, the house with its steel frames, ribbon windows, terraces and exterior stairs is reminiscent of a ship, earning it the nickname "Nudeldampfer" (noodle steamer). Experts rank it among the most important residential buildings of classical modernism, alongside the Villa Savoye, Villa Tugendhat and Fallingwater.
After the end of the war, the Red Army initially used the house as a military command post. The Schminke family then ran a children's convalescent home there until 1950; in 1951 they moved to West Germany, and in 1952 the property was expropriated. From 1963 it served as a Young Pioneers' house, and after 1990 as a municipal leisure center.
In 1999 and 2000 the building was extensively restored with major support from the Wüstenrot Stiftung. As founding donors, the town of Löbau and Hess AG laid the groundwork for the Stiftung Haus Schminke, which since 2009 has been an independent foundation that preserves and researches the listed building and makes it accessible to the public; further repairs to the roof and facade followed in 2018.
Today visitors can explore the house with an audio guide or on a guided tour, experience the largely preserved built-in furniture and the kitchen in the style of the Frankfurt Kitchen, and even stay overnight. Small special exhibitions, workshops for children and projects relating to the neighboring Anker pasta factory round out the offering.
