Om museet
The Heimatpflegeverein Erbendorf (local heritage association) opened the museum in 1995 in rooms of a former monastery on Georg-Bertelshofer-Platz. It shows the history of the town in the northern Upper Palatine Forest and above all the importance of mining for the town.
Mining in Erbendorf is documented since the early 13th century: at first gold was panned from the streams, later lead, silver, zinc and copper were extracted, and from 1850 also hard coal in deep mines, until the pits became unprofitable at the end of the 1920s. Several rooms show regional minerals and rocks, miners' lamps, drill cores, uniforms, plans, photographs and the miners' banner.
Further sections commemorate extinct trades such as weaver, tanner, shoemaker and nail smith, the production of glass beads and Christmas tree decorations, a corner shop, and the Reuth–Erbendorf local railway, the "Erbendorfer Bockl". The museum belongs to the "das zwoelfer" network of museums in the district of Tirschenreuth.
