Heimathaus Pfronten

Om museet

The Heimathaus goes back to a Seelhaus (almshouse) that the residents of Pfronten-Ried founded in 1473 as a hostel for the poor, the sick, and traveling pilgrims. Because of the flood risk on the Vils, it was probably moved to Heitlern as early as the 16th century, where it served as a hospital, later as a municipal building, a jail, and finally as a poorhouse.

After the Second World War the building fell increasingly into disrepair, and in 1977 the municipality decided to demolish it. The Heimatverein Pfronten (local history association) campaigned for its preservation; when the old timber construction of the post-and-plank building came to light under the plaster, the mood changed. In 1990 important parts, above all the south and east facades, were incorporated on Kirchsteige into a new building above the former ice cellar of the Gasthof Kreuz; in 1995 the new Heimathaus was inaugurated.

In the historic living section, the local history collection shows objects from Pfronten's pre-industrial era: a parlor, a kitchen from the early 20th century, tools for farming, woodworking, and shingle making, flax-processing equipment, and household items. The rest of the building houses the municipal library, and small-stage cultural evenings take place in the ice cellar.
