Om museet
The former Heimatmuseum Altenkirchen is now called the Kirschenland-Museum and is housed in the village's old town hall. The building dates from around 1823, served for about 100 years as a village school and for a long time as a mayor's office (Bürgermeisterei). The museum is run by volunteer members of the Heimat- und Wanderverein Altenkirchen (local heritage and hiking club), who also guide visitors through the rooms in person on Sundays.
The name refers to more than two hundred years of cherry growing in the Kohlbach valley. The exhibition also looks at the 19th-century wave of emigration, when hunger and poverty drove many people from the Palatinate to the New World; pictures, documents and letters tell of this. Further topics include hard coal mining in the valley, church and school, craftsmanship in the old village, diamond cutting and traditional agriculture.
Great space is given to village daily life of earlier times, for example with a kitchen-living room from the first half of the 20th century. Picture series and films on monitors complement the objects; in addition, changing special exhibitions take place at irregular intervals. The museum lies on the Kirschenland-Weg, one of the trails of the Begehbares Geschichtsbuch (walk-in history book) of the Verbandsgemeinde Oberes Glantal.
