Heimatmuseum Banfetal
Village museum in Banfe, a district of Bad Laasphe, covering everyday life, crafts, mining and the history of Wittgenstein across about 800 m².
Om museet
The foundation was laid by Werner Schmidt, who began collecting objects from the Banfe Valley in 1962. On May 22, 1965, the collection was presented as a “Heimatstube” (local heritage room) at the first Heimattag (heritage day) – in a municipally owned half-timbered house that at the time also served as a residence and as the equipment house of the volunteer fire department. Members of the local branch of the Sauerländischer Gebirgsverein (Sauerland hiking club) helped with further expansion.
Expanded rooms opened in 1968, and in 1985 the East German Heritage Room was added, with mementos of expellees from Silesia, Pomerania and Prussia. After the fire department moved out in the late 1980s, the museum was able to take over more rooms; the staircase, entrance and facade were renovated. The building now belongs to the town of Bad Laasphe, and the museum is run by volunteers from the Wander- und Heimatfreunde Banfetal (hiking and heritage club).
Across some 800 square meters, the museum shows furnished living rooms, a 1950s hair salon, a classroom and toys, along with prehistory and early history, rural self-sufficiency, flax processing with a loom, forestry, mining and the iron industry, and the history of the fire department. Around the museum courtyard are a show tunnel, a village smithy, a wheelwright’s shop and a cooper’s workshop. For its 60th anniversary in 2025, the association set out to inventory and digitize its holdings and to make the museum more open to families, schools and kindergartens.
