Om museet

The Vohenstrauß local history museum was formerly housed cramped on the fourth floor of the town hall, with about 112 square meters of exhibition space. The Heimatkundlicher Arbeitskreis (local history working group) therefore proposed back in 1986 to renovate the Ackerbürger houses at Sophienstraße 9 and 11 with urban development funding and use them as a museum. The project was controversial in the town council and among the population; renovation began on May 9, 1989.

From 1991 members of the working group developed the concept, the furnishings and the museum education plan on a volunteer basis; on July 17, 1993 the new local history museum was opened. Since then the working group has looked after the house.

In the 18th-century Ackerbürgerhaus the museum shows how people lived and worked in earlier times. Further themes are glass and porcelain as the town's industries, religious folk art, archaeological finds from the surroundings and agriculture. The property also includes a historic mill and a farm garden; occasionally there are changing exhibitions.
