Historische Mühle Allenbach

Om museet

The Allenbach mill has been owned by the Müller family for more than 200 years. Each son brought back new knowledge from his years as a journeyman, so that various techniques have survived side by side in this Hunsrück grain and oil mill.

On the lower floor, three grain grinding mechanisms with different drives are at work: the Egyptian, the Roman with a wooden axle, and the cone drive, which is traced back to Leonardo da Vinci. A single large waterwheel at the side of the mill house powers them all. On the upper floor stand the wooden hoppers and grinding boxes; rhymed text panels with drawings in the style of Wilhelm Busch explain the path from grain to flour.

Thanks to the copper smelting works on the Idarbach, the mill found good markets and was comparatively prosperous, which is why there are two mill parlors here. A Dutch copper engraver left behind a genuine Dutch smoker's armchair. In a side room is the oil mill, whose grinding mechanism is much heavier than that of the grain mill.
