Kastenhof Landau – Das Museum für Steinzeit und Gegenwart
Interactive museum on the Neolithic period in the historic Kastenhof in Landau an der Isar – with the lifelike Stone Age woman Lisar at its center.
Om museet
The Kastenhof in the center of Landau an der Isar was built after the town's founding in 1224. Remains of the fortified town wall are preserved in the south wing; the name recalls its long use as a granary, and at times the building also served as a prison. Today it is a municipal cultural center with a library, music school, event halls, and museum.
After renovation, the Niederbayerisches Archäologiemuseum (Lower Bavarian Archaeological Museum) moved in in 1995, showing a broad span from the Stone Age through the Celts and Romans to the Bajuwari. When interest waned, the town had the exhibition completely redesigned in 2018/19 on about 400 square meters with funding from EU, district, and state sources. On October 27, 2019, the museum opened as the "Museum für Steinzeit und Gegenwart" (Museum of the Stone Age and the Present).
The exhibition focuses on the Neolithic period, when people became sedentary and farming and livestock raising emerged. At its center is Lisar, a lifelike figure that the Dutch paleo-artists Adrie and Alfons Kennis reconstructed from the skeleton of a roughly 7,000-year-old woman from Essenbach. Through her fictional daily life, original finds from the region, replicas to touch, life scenes, and films connect the past with questions about food, resources, and sustainability today.
Among the special pieces are two gold sheets from a Bell Beaker grave in Aufhausen, an unusually large lump of raw graphite, and a burial recovered en bloc with jewelry made of imitation red deer canines. The friends' association founded in 1995 has supported the museum to this day.
