Four artists from the region, most with an archaeological background, engage with archaeological themes in their own way through wood, graphic art and conceptual art.
In the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, one of the largest Celtic urban settlements north of the Alps lay near Manching: an oppidum enclosed by a wall several kilometers long. Decades of excavations brought a wealth of finds to light there. To be able to display them on site, the district of Upper Bavaria, the district of Pfaffenhofen, the market town of Manching and the Keltisch-Römischer Freundeskreis (friends' association) formed a joint association; the museum was established as a branch of the Archäologische Staatssammlung München (Bavarian State Archaeological Collection).
The new building, designed by the Munich firm Fischer Architekten and winner of several awards, opened in June 2006. A long walkway leads visitors into the building, which presents two main themes across some 1,200 square meters: life in the Celtic oppidum, with crafts, trade and cult, and the Roman period at the nearby fort of Oberstimm.
The main attraction of the Roman section is a pair of military ships, each about 15 meters long, dating from around AD 100; they were discovered in the bed of the Brautlach stream in 1986 and recovered in 1994. The museum also became known for the hoard of 483 Celtic gold coins found in 1999, the largest Celtic gold find of the 20th century. It was stolen in a break-in in November 2022; only a small portion later resurfaced, melted down.
The museum complements its permanent exhibition with changing special exhibitions, an object of the month, an archaeological trail through the oppidum and the annual Kelten Römer Fest. In 2026 it celebrated its 20th anniversary.
