Keltenwelt am Glauberg
State museum of the Celts at the Glauberg in the Wetterau: original finds from the princely graves, the statue of the Celtic prince and a large archaeological park.
Om museet
The museum grew out of excavations begun in 1994 at the foot of the Glauberg on the eastern edge of the Wetterau. They uncovered the richly furnished graves of three Celtic warriors from around 400 BC, along with an almost completely preserved life-size sandstone statue with a striking leaf crown – the so-called Celtic Prince of the Glauberg. The finds made the hill one of the most important sites of the early Celts north of the Alps.
Following an architectural competition in 2006, the Aachen firm kadawittfeldarchitektur designed a monolithic building clad in steel plates, set halfway into the slope and aligned with the reconstructed burial mound. A large panoramic window opens the exhibition onto the mound, and the roof serves as a viewing platform. The museum opened on May 5, 2011; the building has won awards including the Auszeichnung vorbildlicher Bauten in Hessen (award for exemplary buildings in Hesse) and the Deutscher Stahlbaupreis (German Steel Construction Prize).
As part of the Archäologisches Landesmuseum Hessen, the Keltenwelt belongs to the hessenARCHÄOLOGIE department of the state office for historic preservation. In addition to the museum, the site includes a research center for the pre-Roman Iron Age and an archaeological park of around 35 hectares with the reconstructed burial mound, a processional way, the ramparts of the hilltop plateau and the remains of a medieval imperial castle. The permanent exhibition shows the original finds from the Glauberg and extends all the way to today's enthusiasm for the Celts in music, folk customs and fashion.
