Om museet

The artist's residence in Holzhausen on the west bank of Lake Ammersee came to the Free State of Bavaria in 1984 as a bequest from Irene Faber-Gasteiger, daughter of the artist couple Mathias and Anna Sophie Gasteiger. The villa was built between 1908 and 1913; in 1994 a museum opened there and the adjoining landscape park was made accessible at the same time. The ensemble is managed by the Bavarian State Palace Administration (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung).

Mathias Gasteiger (1871–1934) was a prominent Munich artist of the turn of the century, whose work moved from late historicism through Art Nouveau to Neoclassicism. His wife Anna Sophie (1877–1954) made a name for herself as a flower painter. The museum displays numerous works by Mathias Gasteiger, including the figure group "Der Tanz" (The Dance) from 1902 and the gilded figure of "Eva" from 1905.

The former studio is set up as a small picture gallery; there, as well as in the bathroom and the salon, hang important paintings by Anna Sophie Gasteiger, including flower still lifes and a view of the house. Historical photographs document the artist family. In the living room, a mix of a Bauernstube (farmhouse parlor) and a hunting room, the 1908 furnishings survive, including the wooden beam ceiling, wood paneling and tiled stove. The salon, completed in 1912, is a Neoclassical hall with a vaulted ceiling.
