Kulturhistorisches Museum Rostock
Art and cultural history of Rostock in the medieval Convent of the Holy Cross – city history, painting, and Classical Modernism with free admission.
Om museet
The Kulturhistorisches Museum Rostock goes back to civic engagement in the 19th century: the art association formed in 1841 opened an art museum in 1859, and from 1883 the antiquities association built up a collection of its own. In 1903 both holdings moved together into the converted Gesellschaftshaus in front of the Steintor. Under Arnold Gräbke the collection was reorganized from 1932 and expanded with furniture, pewter, clothing, and works of art; in 1936 the museum passed into municipal ownership.
During the Second World War the museum suffered heavy losses at its evacuation sites. As early as May 1946 it reopened as the Museum der Stadt Rostock. In 1968 it had to vacate its building for the new Shipping Museum; large parts of the holdings were then kept for decades in makeshift storage facilities.
A new beginning started with the conversion of the Convent of the Holy Cross from 1976. The Cistercian nunnery founded around 1270 became a Protestant convent for noblewomen after the Reformation and is considered one of the last intact medieval building ensembles in the city. Following the restoration of the west wing from 1997, the museum has been located entirely within the convent complex since 2011.
The collection's focal points include city history, Dutch painting, coins, and sacred art. Particularly significant is the estate of the art dealer Bernhard A. Böhmer with over 600 works of Classical Modernism that had been confiscated from German museums in 1937.
