Tell Me Where Home Is

Major thematic exhibition with around 160 works of international contemporary art on home, migration and belonging in the 21st century.

Om museet

The Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg was founded as a private, nonprofit foundation under civil law. Start-up funding came from Volkswagen, the city of Wolfsburg and private donors; construction and ongoing operations are funded by the Munich-based Holler-Stiftung of Asta and Christian Holler, owners of Volkswagen-Versicherungsdienst (an insurance service). The museum opened in 1994.

The Hamburg firm Schweger und Partner designed the building, constructed between 1992 and 1994 as a glass urban loggia at the southern end of Porschestraße, near Scharoun's theater and Aalto's cultural center. Its centerpiece is a 16-meter-high square hall measuring 40 meters on each side, which can be rebuilt for every exhibition and is well suited to large-scale installations. In total, around 3,500 square meters of exhibition space are available. In 2007, the sculpture courtyard was transformed into a Japanese garden.

Since 1994, the museum has collected international contemporary art. The core consists of key works of Minimal Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera, supplemented by more recent positions; today the collection comprises around 1,000 works and groups of works. The museum is best known for its major thematic and solo exhibitions.

Under director Andreas Beitin, the museum is opening up more to the local community with the Open Area, free admission for young people up to age 18 and the monthly Volkswagen Group Art4All program.
