Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg
Ducal art collections at Veste Coburg with Cranach paintings, historic glass, weapons, ceremonial carriages and the Luther Room.
Om museet
In 1837, Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha began to unite the scattered ducal collections at Veste Coburg. The foundation was formed by the weapons from the castle's arsenal; the first exhibition rooms opened in 1839. Soon afterward the hunting marquetry room from Schloss Ehrenburg was relocated to the Veste, and the Kupferstichkabinett (print room) and the coin cabinet of Duke Franz Friedrich Anton were added. Ernst II expanded the holdings with, among other things, the Turkish booty of the imperial field marshal Friedrich Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and further weapon collections.
Furniture, carriages and sleighs, porcelain and Kunstkammer pieces from several ducal palaces were brought together at the castle; in 1901 the important glass collection of Duke Alfred was added. After the end of the monarchy, most of the art holdings passed in 1919 to the newly founded Coburger Landesstiftung, which is still the sponsor of the collections today.
The tour combines historic rooms with modern presentations: the Große Hofstube, rebuilt after a fire in 1501–1504, the living quarters in the Fürstenbau furnished around 1910–1920 for Duke Carl Eduard, the Luther Chapel and the Luther Room. The highlights include Old German paintings with works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, supplemented in 2003 by pictures from the Sammlung Georg Schäfer, the Hedwig glass from the 11th century, Venetian glass, two gilded Renaissance bridal carriages and one of the most extensive weapon collections in Europe.
