Midlertidig adresse. The museum building at Lessingstraße 1 has been partially renovated since July 2025 (completion planned for the turn of the year 2027/2028). Until then, the Kunstsammlungen are showing a selection of the collection in the "ZwischenRAUM" in the Galerie am Domhof (Domhof 2); Pechstein's major works are on tour during the construction period.
Intervention in the FarbRAUM marking the 100th birthday of Edgar Klier, taking a fresh look at Zwickau art from the GDR era and especially highlighting the perspectives of women artists.
Participatory project on family and living together, with photographs, interviews, and poetry; the results are to be shown alongside works from the collection from early March 2027.
Om museet
The Zwickau city council laid the foundation in 1897 with the König-Albert-Stiftung (King Albert Foundation). After more than ten years of fundraising among the townspeople, the building on Lessingstraße, designed by Zittau architect Richard Schiffner, opened as the König-Albert-Museum on April 23, 1914. It brought together the municipal painting collection, previously shown in the Kunstverein (art association) building on Domhof, with antiquities, the mineral collection of the Richter-Stiftung, the Schumann collection, and the Ratsschulbibliothek (council school library).
From 1925, the young art historian Hildebrand Gurlitt began building up a collection of modern art in a targeted way, but he was dismissed for political reasons as early as 1930. Over the decades, other departments left the building: the Schumann Museum moved into the composer's birthplace in 1956, and the city history collection moved into the Priesterhäuser in 2003. This brought the art collections – Old Masters, modern and GDR art, prints and drawings, sculpture, and minerals – to the fore. In 2014, the Max-Pechstein-Museum was added, devoted to the Expressionist born in Zwickau.
Since July 2025, the listed building has been undergoing an energy-efficiency renovation costing around €8.5 million that will also improve accessibility; completion is planned for the turn of the year 2027/2028. Since January 25, 2025, the museum has been showing a selection of its holdings in the "ZwischenRAUM" in the historic Kunstverein building on Domhof – where Pechstein first exhibited in 1905 – while Pechstein's major works are on an international tour.
