Photography exhibition in the Remise on the nature, underwater world, and culture around Siberia's Lake Baikal; free admission.
Through Kurt Tucholsky's 1912 novella "Rheinsberg. Ein Bilderbuch für Verliebte" (Rheinsberg: A Picture Book for Lovers), Rheinsberg is closely linked to the author in literary terms. On April 27, 1991, the town opened a Tucholsky memorial in the palace, followed on October 30, 1993, by the first permanent exhibition on his life and work. With a redesigned presentation, the museum received its current name in 2004.
The museum is housed in a side wing of the palace. On display are letters, manuscripts, magazines, photographs, and books, as well as personal items such as Tucholsky's desk and his death mask. With more than 10,000 archival items, the collection is the second-largest on Tucholsky in Germany; it is complemented by literary journalism of the Weimar Republic, including all of Tucholsky's first editions, an art collection of about 250 works, and a collection on local history. Since 2010, an archive showcase has offered a glimpse into the holdings.
Beyond its exhibition, the museum is a literary venue: it has organized hundreds of readings and numerous gallery exhibitions, and since 1995 it has awarded the "Stadtschreiber zu Rheinsberg" (Rheinsberg town writer) fellowship; since 2012 the Remise (former carriage house) has served as an additional exhibition space. From 1993 to 2024 the museum was directed by Peter Böthig; the German federal government lists it as a cultural site of memory of national importance. It is run by the town of Rheinsberg, which also manages the Alfred Wegener Museum in Zechlinerhütte.
