Landschaftsmuseum Westerwald
Open-air museum on the edge of Hachenburg: eight historic Westerwald buildings show rural living, work and crafts up to around 1960.
Om museet
The Landschaftsmuseum Westerwald opened on September 20, 1976. It lies in a park-like setting on the edge of Hachenburg, right next to the Burggarten, and since 1977 it has regularly held special exhibitions alongside the permanent exhibition – around 50 by its 50th anniversary in 2026. From 1980, historic half-timbered houses were dismantled at their original sites in the region and rebuilt on the museum grounds; the museum's friends' group was founded in 1984.
Today the museum village comprises eight buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The oldest is a barn built around 1680 from Westerburg-Sainscheid. From Dornburg-Frickhofen come a richly decorated mill house from 1701 and an oil mill from 1750; also on site are the bakehouse of the Büdinger Mühle from 1850, a village school from Obermörsbach, a small Westerwald house and the Hofgartenhaus for special exhibitions. The entrance building is the house from Norken, built around 1723, in which living quarters, stable and barn lay under one roof; it was rebuilt on the grounds between 1987 and 1991.
The exhibitions are devoted to everyday farm life, self-sufficiency and the workshops of carpenters, potters, blacksmiths and other craftspeople. Since September 2020, a new permanent exhibition of about 100 square meters on the upper floor of the entrance building has offered an overview of the landscape, mineral resources, agriculture and trades of the Westerwald. The museum is run by Museen im Westerwald GmbH, a company of the Westerwaldkreis district, which also operates the Keramikmuseum in Höhr-Grenzhausen.
