Om museet
The literary scholar Walter Höllerer (1922–2003), a native of Sulzbach-Rosenberg, handed over a large part of his archive to the Free State of Bavaria in 1977, laying the foundation for the Literaturarchiv in his hometown. The institution moved into the former district court building; its first holdings included more than 35,000 letters from authors.
Today the institution combines three tasks: an archive for modern literature since 1945, a Literaturhaus Oberpfalz with readings, seminars and the regional book fair held every two years, and a literature museum. It is run by the association Literaturarchiv Sulzbach-Rosenberg e. V.
The permanent exhibition fills eight rooms on two floors and tells the story of German-language literature in the postwar period, especially from the 1950s to the 1980s. It shows letters, manuscripts, galley proofs, photographs and first editions, including material on the journal Akzente, on Gruppe 47 and on the making of "Blechtrommel" by Günter Grass.
