Om museet
The Literaturmuseum der Moderne is part of the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach (German Literature Archive) and complements the neighboring Schiller-Nationalmuseum with a building dedicated to the literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. Planned from 2002 onward, the building designed by David Chipperfield Architects (project architect Alexander Schwarz) was handed over in early 2006 and opened on June 6, 2006, in the presence of Federal President Horst Köhler.
The architecture takes up the motif of an ancient columned temple and translates it into exposed concrete, shell limestone, and wood; the exhibition rooms lie largely within the slope beneath the terrace overlooking the Neckar valley. In 2007 the building received the British Stirling Prize and the Deutscher Architekturpreis (German Architecture Prize).
On display are originals from the archive's holdings – manuscripts, letters, notebooks, and personal documents of authors. The permanent exhibition "Die Seele 2," on view since November 2021, brings together more than 180 items from the years 1899 to 2001, including documents by Kafka, Döblin, and Kästner. In addition, there are usually two temporary exhibitions a year. The museum department was long headed by Heike Gfrereis; Vera Hildenbrandt has been in charge since 2022.
